Why BMI matters for GLP-1 medications
BMI isn't just a health metric — it's the gate that determines whether you can be prescribed a GLP-1 for weight loss. The FDA approved Wegovy, Zepbound, и Saxenda for chronic weight management at a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition. Diabetes-indicated GLP-1s like Ozempic и Mounjaro follow different criteria.
That's why this calculator does double duty: it gives you the standard BMI number и immediately tells you which side of the eligibility line you fall on, so you know whether a telehealth consult is worth your time before you book one.
What we do — and don't — do
goodx doesn't prescribe, sell, or ship medication. We're an independent comparison site: we assess your situation и point you to licensed telehealth providers who handle the prescription. If your BMI suggests you're a candidate, take our 60-second quiz to match with a medication и provider, or compare GLP-1 options side by side.
FAQ
How do I calculate my BMI?
BMI = your weight divided by your height squared. In US units the formula is 703 × weight(lb) ÷ height(inches)². A 5'6", 190 lb person has a BMI of about 30.7. This calculator does it instantly — just enter your height и weight.
What BMI do you need to qualify for Wegovy or Zepbound?
FDA-approved weight-management GLP-1s (Wegovy, Zepbound, Saxenda) are indicated for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, OR a BMI of 27 or higher who also have a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or heart disease. A licensed clinician makes the final decision.
Is BMI an accurate measure of health?
BMI is a useful population-level screening tool but has limits: it does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read as "overweight," и it does not capture fat distribution. Clinicians use it alongside waist circumference, lab work, и medical history — not on its own.
What are the BMI categories?
Underweight: below 18.5. Normal: 18.5-24.9. Overweight: 25-29.9. Obesity class I: 30-34.9. Class II: 35-39.9. Class III (severe): 40 и above. The obesity classes are where FDA weight-management GLP-1 eligibility typically begins.
