Compounded GLP-1 is medication custom-prepared at a state-licensed pharmacy. It became widely available during the official FDA-declared drug shortage and remains available under specific regulatory pathways.
What is different
- Not FDA-reviewed. The FDA does NOT review compounded medications for safety, efficacy, or manufacturing quality.
- Cheaper. Typical pricing: $199–$399/month vs. $1,000+ for brand.
- Variable formulation. Compounded products may include additives (B12, etc.) not present in the FDA-approved drug.
Regulatory status (2026)
The FDA declared the semaglutide and tirzepatide shortages resolved in late 2024. 503A pharmacies can still compound under specific patient-need exceptions. Read our post-enforcement guide for the current state of the market.
