Does metformin cause weight loss?
A little. Metformin is generally weight-neutral to mildly weight-reducing — most people lose about 1–3 kg over several months, with effects strongest in those with insulin resistance. It’s a legitimate, inexpensive option, but weight loss is a side benefit, not its purpose.
When metformin makes sense
Metformin can be a good fit if you have type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, PCOS, or insulin resistance, want a low-cost generic, or can’t take a GLP-1. Clinicians sometimes use it alongside a GLP-1. It’s just not the most powerful tool for weight loss alone.
Why GLP-1 is more effective — and how to get it
For meaningful weight loss, GLP-1 medications win clearly: semaglutide (~15%) and tirzepatide (~21%) far exceed metformin. Compare them in best GLP-1 for weight loss, and get one through a licensed telehealth provider if appropriate — start with the options below or our 60-second quiz.
